Indonesia is a diver’s dream, teeming with life, rich in diversity, and full of surprises no matter the season. But while diving here is fantastic all year, certain marine encounters are tied to the rhythms of nature. Knowing when to go and where, makes all the difference.

From manta ray congregations and anchovy migrations to hammerhead sightings in remote volcanic waters, each season brings something special.

Whether you’re planning a liveaboard adventure or targeting specific marine life, this guide will help you align your trip with nature’s most spectacular performances.

Komodo National Park – What to See and When

Komodo is one of Indonesia’s most exciting year-round destinations. With its powerful currents, nutrient-rich waters, and dramatic underwater terrain, each season offers something unique.

  • Manta Ray Season (All Year, Peak October to March):

Mantas are found in Komodo throughout the year, but the peak season runs from October to March. During these months, plankton blooms attract large numbers of reef and oceanic mantas to sites like Karang Makassar and Mawan for incredible up-close encounters.

  • Macro Life (Year-Round) :

Critter-rich sites like Wainilu and Siaba Besar are home to pygmy seahorses, ghost pipefish, frogfish, and a rainbow of nudibranchs, especially from January through April, as the rainy season brings nutrient-rich waters that supercharge the macro scene..

  • Bumphead Parrotfish Spawning (March–April):

One of Komodo’s lesser-known highlights, these enormous fish gather in schools around the full moon in March and April to spawn, a fascinating and photogenic phenomenon.

  • Pelagic Season (May to September):

Stronger currents and cooler water temperatures during the dry season attract larger pelagic species, including trevallies, tunas, reef sharks, and swirling schools of fusiliers. Sites like Castle Rock and The Cauldron are prime for high-octane dives.

  • Reef Life (Year-Round):

No matter the month, Komodo’s coral gardens remain vibrant and full of life. Turtles, sweetlips, napoleon wrasse, cuttlefish, and giant groupers are common companions.

Raja Ampat – Biodiversity in Every Season

raja ampat indonesia beauty

Raja Ampat is a haven of biodiversity, offering something magical in every season. That said, knowing when certain behaviours and migrations happen can take your dive experience to the next level.

  • Manta Ray Season (All Year, Peak October to April):

Mantas are spotted year-round at famous cleaning stations like Manta Ridge and Manta Sandy, but sightings are most consistent from October to April, when plankton-rich waters draw them in large numbers.

  • Anchovy Season (September to January):

From September to January, certain reefs in Raja Ampat come alive with the extraordinary anchovy migration. Millions of shimmering silver anchovies rise from the deep and flood the shallows, forming tightly packed, shape-shifting clouds that flow like underwater storms.

These hypnotic swarms attract hungry visitors, mobula rays and shoals of jack fish take turns charging through the dense bait balls in bursts of speed and precision. The combination of massive anchovy movements and predatory choreography makes this one of the most dynamic and thrilling marine spectacles Raja Ampat has to offer.

  • Wobbegong & Epaulette Sharks (Year-Round, Best October to May):

These cryptic and fascinating bottom dwellers are best observed when conditions are calm, especially at night or during shallow reef dives from October through May.

  • Sea Turtle Nesting (May to July):

Both green and hawksbill turtles can be found year-round, but their nesting activity peaks during the early dry season. Divers often spot them cruising reefs or resting under coral ledges.

  • Year-Round Biodiversity:

With over 600 coral species and more than 1,700 reef fish species, every dive in Raja Ampat feels like a discovery. Whether you love macro life or vast schools of fish, this region never disappoints.

Travel tip: Southern Raja Ampat (including Misool) may be affected by wind and swell from June to August. During this period, focus on central and northern regions for the best conditions.

Banda Sea – Hammerheads, Crossings, and More

banda sea gunung api

The Banda Sea offers some of Indonesia’s most remote and dramatic diving. While areas around Ambon can be dived year-round, the legendary Banda crossings, linking Raja Ampat and Komodo, are best done from September – November and April – May.

  • Schooling Hammerhead Season (September to November):

Liveaboard expeditions during this short window provide access to isolated sites like Manuk and Suanggi, where divers have the rare chance to witness schooling hammerhead sharks in deep, open waters.

  • Whale Sightings & Massive Fish Schools:

This is also the season when pelagic action is at its peak, with large schools of fish, napoleon wrasse, and the occasional whale gliding through the blue.
