The earth’s oceans are incredible realms, with breathtaking underwater landscapes, diverse marine life, and endless opportunities for adventure – and what better way to enjoy it all than with scuba diving? If you’ve been considering scuba diving or becoming an open water scuba diver, then all you need to do to get a step closer to your dream is to get yourself a valid diving licence.
A diving licence is a legal certification issued by scuba diving organisations such as PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors), NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors), and SSI (Scuba Schools International). Once you have obtained a diving licence, you can rent scuba diving equipment and take part in guided dives with dive centres and operators worldwide. You will also be able to purchase your scuba diving equipment and dive independently.
How Many Levels Of PADI Certifications Are There?
Here at Mikumba Diving, we offer a wide range of PADI courses, some based out of our Komodo dive centre, liveaboard Indonesia, and some taught from our Raja Ampat location.

If you’re a beginner and considering getting your very first diving license, then the following courses and certifications would be most suitable for you.
Beginner – PADI Open Water Diver (OWD)
This is the first diving licence level and the most popular. It not only provides a solid foundation for future scuba diving experiences but is also a prerequisite for many other scuba diving certifications like Advanced and Rescue. Recognised worldwide, OWD divers can dive to a maximum depth of 18 metres under the supervision of a certified instructor or a divemaster.
Throughout the course, Mikumba’s highly-trained PADI Instructors will teach you how to scuba dive in a relaxed, supportive learning environment. By the end of the course, you’ll have the skills and knowledge to dive anywhere you like, including Indonesia’s beautiful Komodo National Park or Raja Ampat.
Beginner – PADI Discover Scuba Diving
A great course for those who want to find out what scuba diving is like before deciding to get their diving licence. During a Discover Scuba® Diving experience, you can try scuba diving for the first time in a pool or calm water environment. Mikumba’s highly-trained PADI® Professional will provide scuba gear, explain basic scuba diving skills, and answer any questions you may have.
Once you’ve completed your Beginner’s courses, you can always opt for the next stage to become an Advanced Open Water Diver or a Professional Diver or Instructor.
