The Hammerhead Expedition

Alor – Banda Sea – Alor – Maumere

Have you ever seen hammerhead sharks?

Mikumba Diving is organising a special expedition and we’ve decided to go and look for some big stuff!  We will start in Alor and finish in Maumere, Flores.

Unfortunately we have had to cancel the trip this year but will be running it again in 2021.

We’re planning on doing a minimum of 28 dives for this trip and are going to be searching for the schools of hammerheads that congregate there at this time of year.  There are several atolls, totally remote, that drop down to 2,000m, so they’re the perfect place to find what we’re looking for.  We’ve been lucky enough to see 100+ hammerheads at once on our previous expeditions.

We’re going to be looking around The Banda Sea visiting Nil Desperandum, Gili Manuk, Hatta Atoll and more but the exact route will be weather dependent.  If we can get further east we’ll go to the famous snake island – Gili Manuk, an active volcano where you can see hundreds of sea snakes on one dive alone.  When we start to run low on food and supplies we’ll head to Alor and visit the headhunter village followed by a night dive.

The water temperature can vary – down to 17 degrees in Alor or up to 28 in other areas, but this is why the big stuff comes in – we’ll even have the chance of seeing mola molas – the oceanic sunfish, and possibly even sperm whales – we’ve also snorkelled with false killer whales here in the past.

On the way back from Alor to Maumere we’ll stop off at Kumba – an active volcano that usually erupts once or twice an hour!  If time and weather allow, we’ll do 3 dives around here, and stay for sunset so you can experience something you might never see again.

This trip will be on our new liveaboard –  a 32m long, 7 m wide phinisi, she has 2 sea view cabins with double beds on the main deck with amazing views, 2 deluxe cabins with double beds and 2 standard cabins with 3 single beds.  All cabins have aircon with en-suite facilities and hot water showers.  For more information on the boat click here.

Before booking please have a look at our Terms & Conditions.

Please note, this trip is only available for experienced divers, to join us you will need at least 75 dives and certified AOW.  We can teach Deep and Nitrox specialities on the boat so let us know if you’re interested.

As safety is our primary concern for our guests and staff we have strict guidelines that need to be followed.  Before your booking can be accepted you will need to complete a medical statement and get clearance from your Doctor stating you are fit to dive if you answer YES to any of the questions on the form.

If it turns our that this is incomplete, or you do not have medical clearance from your Doctor we will have to cancel your booking without refund.  We aren’t doctors, and medical staff in remote places are not the same as qualified diving doctors in the West.  It is not fair for anybody – neither our guests nor our staff – for you to put your safety at risk, even if it IS the trip of a lifetime.

While we aim to have as much fun and excitement on the expeditions as possible, the health and safety our all our guests is of the upmost importance to us at Mikumba Diving, and we are serious about ensuring you are well looked after on our liveaboards.

Most expenses are included:

  • Bed / Room
  • All meals
  • 2 sheets, pillow and towel – but unfortunately no laundry machine, so please bring your own sleeping bag/liner if required
  • Soft drinks and alcohol are not included but we will have beers and soft drinks for sale
  • Amazing diving 🙂

Not included in the price of the expedition:

  • Flights – but we can recommend who to fly with
  • Park fees
  • Soft drinks and alcohol
  • Land based accommodation
  • Tips (for crew and guides)
  • Any other expenses

Mikumba Diving will always do everything we can to ensure your safety, but accidents can still happen.

Force Majeure and Acts of God are also a possibility, and there is nothing we can do to stop these from happening.

You will need to purchase sufficient insurance to cover all eventualities – diving incidents, flight cancellations and possible evacuations.  We recommend using DAN for diving, and Nomads for the rest, as they provide good cover.

Although we may be in remote places, we do have continual contact with our office via satellite phone, and can help with arranging any assistance that may be needed.
